One job less - what i've learnt

Hey guys, so you know how I've always been talking about having two jobs where I get to work from home for both? Yeah, my PR boss is hiring a full-timer because working from home means that there's only so much that I can do. With that said, this month will be my final month working for her as a PR co-ordinator.

I kind of felt that it was coming because I could tell that the company was taking up more clients and growing so rapidly despite our PR team being so small comprising only the 4 of us. And 3 of us having two jobs; including my boss. Another thing was that I live in Cyberjaya, far far away from the office that's in Petaling Jaya. So the inconvenience of driving or commuting an hour away is there.

Even though I personally feel like it's a very unfortunate thing for me, I do believe that we need change to keep growing. And I finally have the time to focus on myself a little bit. To take a breather.

Anyways, from the 1 and a half years I've been working with my boss and the 4 months in BPRA, here's what I've learnt :-

1. Work is work - I learnt how to take the downfalls as it is and to not attach myself emotionally to a setback. We should take failures as inconveniences. For example, a traffic jam, we'll get through it in time. It isn't the end of the world.

2. Patience - I've learnt that not everyone has the same momentum as you do. Not everyone loves their job, some are forced because of financial commitments. All we can do is to be patient with them.

3. Work-Life balance - This point is really important. You really do need time for yourself or else you'd just get all burnt out and demotivated. I've had that twice this year. Another thing that I've learnt about this industry is that you really need to love what you do. You really need to enjoy attending events, meeting new people and pulling all-nighters. Especially if your client is the owner of a famous bar, that's where your fun mixes with work. Of course it isn't the case for all PR work but there are such.

4. Time management - How you manage your time plays a big role. You need to be able to multitask. In my case, I have school, PR and Digital Marketing. There are bound to be ad-hoc projects and tasks. Last minute is never a good option unless you really want to burn the midnight oil and go to class tired.

5. Independence - No one in the grown up world is going to spoon-feed you with all the necessary information. You've just got to stay ahead and do your own research. Honestly speaking, nobody has the time to walk you through baby steps. Pick up your slack and do it on your own. Also, by earning my own money, I try my best to live independently without allowance from my parents and to also learn how to financially manage myself. I'm not good at it, losing this job is a financial setback for me but I'll figure it out.

6. Communication - Teamwork here is crucial. You've got to update your team members on your work. Always double-check and always ask if you're unsure. Also, every team member has their assigned task, by working together and communicating right, you'll get a good outcome.

Nonetheless, I'm very grateful for the opportunities I had with this job. This is by far the longest job I've ever had. Prior to this, I worked at UNIQLO for a month. Anyways, I think that I'll be taking a short break and then I'll get down to looking for another job because I have bills to pay.

That's all for now.

xx, Farm
